Have you heard of a silent appointment???
Do you dread the thought of making small talk with your hairdresser? Only to resort to the weather, Rona or the Kardashians? Or bury your head in a magazine and just hope that no eye contact is made? Enter - the Silent Appointment….. In this day and age, you can have lots of sensory experiences that equate to anxiety or a feeling of overwhelm. The Silent Appointment can help with that. It usually starts with a text message prior - “Hi Megan, I’m just not feeling very talky today. Is it ok if I have a silent appointment today?” This is followed by a message from me that reiterates “there is absolutely no problem with this. But I just need to check in, Are you ok? No details required.” This allows for me to perform what I see is a Duty of Care - I don’t need to know the in’s and out’s - but I definitely need to ensure my person is safe and at no danger to themselves or others. When the appointment comes around - I get the details out of the way - cut? Color? Blow wave/straighten/curl? Drink of water or a cup of tea? Then I offer some AirPods and I get to work. While the color is processing, I suggest that the person may want to sit in the waiting area or a quiet space - so they are not disrupted by the chatter of other people. This is 100% totally fine and no offence is EVER taken. We live in a world that sometimes we need quiet time and reflection. Also, a visit to the hairdresser may be the only quiet time for a person, so I don’t want to drain them of any energy that they may be desperately trying to conserve. Don’t be afraid to ask for a Silent Appointment with me or any of my colleagues - it’s just another way that we can support you. Xxx
